Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay to report Capital Gains Tax?
No. Reporting to HMRC is free, and our calculators are free too. The report is optional: it works through your own figures, flags what may be missing and gives your deadline date.
Will it guarantee my tax bill is right?
No. It works out the figures you enter and shows what each possible omission would change. Whether a cost or relief applies depends on facts we haven't verified, and HMRC decides.
Is it up to date?
Yes, for 2026/27. The rules were checked against GOV.UK and HMRC on 28 October 2026 and against the Budget 2026 documents on 28 October 2026: CGT rates and the £3,000 allowance are unchanged, and the report applies the Business Asset Disposal Relief lifetime limit for your sale date (£500,000 for sales from 6 April 2027). A sale in 2024/25 or 2025/26 is worked out at the rates in force on its sale date, including Business Asset Disposal Relief at 10% or 14%.
What do I get?
A PDF report of your own figures for 2026/27: every figure worked out, the 18%/24% split using your income, a Check this section for every answer that may change the figures, items to investigate, an evidence checklist for your type of asset, what to report and when, and the official sources. You also get a spreadsheet to track each allowable cost and its evidence. Both download straight after payment; the links work for 30 days.
How is it different from the Survival Pack?
The Survival Pack is a general 31-page guide to the rules, the same for everyone. The report is about your sale: it works through your numbers, shows what each possible omission would change in pounds, and gives your deadline date. Many people use both.
Do I have to type my figures again?
No. If you have used one of the calculators on this site, the form is filled in from it. Check the figures, answer up to eight optional yes/no questions, and pay.
Will it tell me which reliefs I can claim?
No. It shows what each relief or missing cost would change if it applies, and what you would need to check and keep as evidence. Whether a relief applies depends on facts we have not verified.
Can I use it to report to HMRC?
It gives you the figures HMRC asks for and explains which service to use. The real-time Capital Gains Tax service asks you to attach your own calculation; the worked figures in the report can be that. You still report and pay yourself.
Is it personal tax advice?
No. It works out the figures you enter and lists questions to check. For complex disposals, business sales or anything high value, speak to a qualified tax adviser.
What if it isn't useful?
Use our contact page and we'll refund you in full.
Not tax advice: the report works out the figures you enter and lists questions to check. It is general information, not personal tax advice, and it never says you are entitled to a relief. Rules checked against GOV.UK and HMRC on 28 October 2026, and updated for Budget 2026 (28 October 2026).
